Zone of Proximal Development

 vygotsky's zone of proximal development

                                                        (McLeod, 2007).

As the diagram depicts, the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is an important concept presented by Vygotsky. Principles of intellectual adaptation through tools of development and support of the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO) can effectively influence a child to progress from being unable to complete a task independently to proficiency in completing the same task over time (McLeod, 2007).

By employing this principle, an educator can assess a learner's knowledge and strengths and identify those areas in which he may need encouragement and help. Then, principles of Vygotsky's Social Development Theory can be employed to promote achievement.
