Influences of Teachers/Tutors on Development

Both Piaget and Vygotsky value the inquisitive nature of the child in motivation for learning to occur. Piaget seemed to value self-initiated discovery models whereas Vygotsky recognized social factors as being very influential in learning processes (McLeod, 2007).

According to Vygotsky, skillful tutors or teachers can interact socially with a child to provide modeling of behaviors, verbal instructions, and scaffolding. He calls this interaction cooperative or collaborative dialogue, and his precept is that the child can perform better with assistance than he can perform on his own. By internalizing the performance, the child can achieve long-term benefit from the interaction (McLeod, 2007).

In the video below, we see a teacher demonstrate these techniques with a preschool child.

    1. Belinda,
Thanks so much for your comments. I enjoyed doing the page, and I learned a lot of good information about social processes in knowledge construction, Piaget, and Vygotsky. I also learned a fun new blogging skill!
